What is Wordle and why is it so popular?

Chances are that you have often seen the colorful blocks on Twitter or Facebook. They are the answer to a new internet sensation called Wordle. What should you know about the puzzle game and why is it so popular?

Wordle’s rules are pretty straightforward: you have to guess the five-letter word of the day in six attempts. Hopefully, after each attempt, a block will turn green: this means that you have the correct letter in the correct position. A yellow block means that you have the correct letter, but it is still in the wrong place. The game actually shows many similarities with Lingo.

Many clones already deleted

The puzzle game became very popular in a short time. The game’s creator, Josh Wardle, opposite tech website TechCrunch know that Wordle already had two million players in just a few weeks. So many Wordle apps have now appeared that Apple has decided to launch a series of Wordle clones from the App Store to delete.

While there are still similar apps for your phone, it’s best to play the game through your browser. Wordle is free to play here, without being bothered by annoying ads.

Wordle resembles Lingo.

Addictive

Many will wonder where the attraction comes from when making the first puzzle. It probably starts with the intriguing blocks that are shared on social media. The attention is quickly drawn and before you know it you are on your first puzzle.

The game is also easily accessible: in principle you can complete the puzzle within ten minutes and puzzlers of all ages can join in without difficulty.

Others cite the puzzle’s exclusivity as its appeal: you only get six attempts each day to guess the word. Then you have to wait 24 hours for the next one. At a time when everything is available ‘on demand’, Wordle once again offers a fixed moment in the day to look forward to.

Dutch alternative

Wordle’s puzzle is currently only available in English. Not all words will therefore be equally recognizable. We would like to introduce two Dutch alternatives to you, the first is called word.

In this variant it is also possible to guess words with 3 to 8 letters, depending on how much challenge you are looking for. Also here you can only guess a word once a day.

Woordje is the Dutch alternative to Wordle.

A second option is wordle, so with two o’s. This one is very similar to the original variant, with the advantage that you do not need to be a master of the English language.

If your vocabulary in English is limited, you now know two Wordle variants that you can use every day to crack your brain!
