WhatsApp confirms: there is finally an app for the iPad

Good news if you regularly use WhatsApp, because the messaging service has confirmed that there will finally be an app for the iPad!

There is finally a special app from WhatsApp for the iPad! The message service has confirmed this in a message on X (formerly Twitter). WhatsApp has been working on a customized application for the tablet for some time. The first test versions of the app are already available on the iPad, but a definitive version has not yet been released. Possibly that will change soon, because this is the first time in a long time that WhatsApp itself has come up with a response.

WhatsApp already released a test version for the iPad in September 2023. After the release of this test version, it remained silent for a long time, because Meta no longer released any new updates for the beta. At the beginning of 2025 a new beta of WhatsApp appeared for the iPad. So it seems that WhatsApp finally gets an app for the iPad, which may already appear soon.

That’s how the new app works

The version of WhatsApp for the iPad is similar to the version for the Mac, but with an adapted design. You can link a WhatsApp account to the iPad with a QR code, as is now also the case with the Mac. Then you get access to all (group) conversations of your account on the tablet. A list of the conversations you see on the left in the picture, on the right the open conversation appears in WhatsApp.

You no longer need iPhone to send messages, instead you can use the iPad. It is expected that the iPad version of WhatsApp will be almost the same as the app for the Mac. That means that you can also video call and make a speech call via the application on the iPad. This way you are no longer dependent on Facetime and Imessage on the tablet, but you can also use WhatsApp.

Release of WhatsApp for the iPad

So whatsapp finally comes with a special app for the iPad. In the background, Meta is working on another application for the tablet. Meta is the parent company behind WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. According to rumors, the company also comes for the latter with an application for the iPad. The iPad versions of WhatsApp and Instagram may appear soon at the same time.

To use WhatsApp on the iPad, the device must run on iOS 12 or newer. It is not yet clear when Meta will bring the final version of WhatsApp to the iPad. It may not be long, especially now that the company itself has responded to X. Meta has not yet announced an official release date, but that may change in the coming weeks. So just patience.
