WhatsApp finally comes with a version for the iPad (but not yet for everyone)

WhatsApp has finally released a new version for the iPad, but not everyone can use it. That’s how it is.

WhatsApp on the iPad

We’ve been waiting for it for years, but there is still no special version of WhatsApp available for the iPad. That may finally change soon, because a new beta is available for the messaging service on the iPad. WhatsApp already released a test version for the iPad in September 2023. This version is similar to the version for the Mac, but with a design adapted to the tablet.

There hasn’t been a major update to the WhatsApp app for the iPad since. Now Meta has finally released a new version of WhatsApp, developed specifically for the iPad. This is again a beta, which is only available to a small number of users. Still, it is a positive sign, because this means that Meta is still working on a special WhatsApp application for the iPad.

This is what the app looks like

A notification was sent last weekend with the test version of WhatsApp for the iPhone, announcing a new version of WhatsApp for the iPad. The new beta can now be tried by a limited group of users. The first screen shots show few differences with the previous test version of WhatsApp. It again looks like the Mac version of WhatsApp, with a list of the conversations on the left and the open chat on the right side of the image.

In addition, Meta, the parent company behind Facebook and WhatsApp, is working on new widgets for the messaging service. The version of WhatsApp for the iPad currently has the same widgets available as on the iPhone. You can choose from three widgets, containing the most recent conversations. A widget will be added later, in which you can read new messages from WhatsApp without opening the app. A similar feature is already available with the Android version.

Release WhatsApp for the iPad

Linking WhatsApp on the iPad is the same as with the Mac version. You scan a QR code with your iPhone, then you are automatically logged in to the tablet. Existing chats are synchronized and it is possible to have a (video) conversation. That is striking, because WhatsApp on the Mac does not have these functions. You cannot start a telephone or video call there, but you can do so with the iPad.

To use WhatsApp on the iPad, the device must be running iOS 12 or newer. It is not yet clear when Meta will bring the final version of WhatsApp to the iPad. That may not last long, especially now that a new beta of the messaging service has been released. In any case, Meta has not yet made an official announcement about WhatsApp for the iPad, but that could change in the coming weeks. So just be patient.
