WhatsApp on Android gets a feature that the iPhone has had for years

Something will soon change with WhatsApp backups on Android, which has long been the case with iPhones. This is what’s going on.

WhatsApp on Android gets a function that the iPhone already has

Google and WhatsApp have both announced that things will change for users of WhatsApp on Android. The chat history (including images and videos) will be backed up again affects Google Drive storage space. That was not the case for five years. It doesn’t matter whether you have the free 15 GB subscription or pay for extra storage.

WhatsApp says the change will happen for all users on Android in the first half of 2024 and that users will be notified at least 30 days in advance. For beta users, the change will take effect in December.

Users who do not want to use their Google Account for backups can use the ‘Transfer your chat history‘ when they switch to a new Android device. This works wirelessly as long as WiFi is enabled on both phones. Fortunately, you do not need the network connection itself for this, because it is a direct transfer.

Storage restrictions by WhatsApp

Google says there will be no changes to WhatsApp backups on Android, other than possible storage limitations. If you delete things in WhatsApp, they will also be deleted in your cloud backup. This way you can save space in Google Drive. Google says it will also offer eligible users one-time Google One promotions.

How WhatsApp works on iOS is no different than on Android, except that Apple still only offers 5 GB of iCloud storage for non-paying users. That could have been expanded a bit in the meantime, but that’s besides the point.
