The new year has started and it is slowly becoming clear what Apple plans in 2023. What do we expect from the iPads in 2023?
New iPads in 2023
Earlier we put together all our expectations for the products that Apple will release this year. Until now there was no iPad in between. Can we expect a new tablet from Apple this year? We put together all the rumors and expectations for you.
1. Eleventh generation iPad will not appear this year
Apple launched the tenth generation of the iPad last year. Even after the launch of the new iPad, Apple continued to sell the ninth generation of the iPad. The two iPads are quite different from each other, both in appearance and content. With this, Apple has made the ninth generation the entry-level model of the iPad.
The eleventh generation iPad will most likely be equipped with the A15 Bionic chip. The iPad 2022 is equipped with the A14 Bionic chip, so the A15 would be a logical next step. In addition, this new iPad will (hopefully) get support for the Apple Pencil 2.
For the time being, therefore, no major updates for the eleventh generation iPad, making it unlikely that the tablet will appear this year. The tenth generation iPad can last for a while, but may drop in price this year. Apple will then remove the ninth generation iPad from the market and focus entirely on selling the tenth generation. In any case, it is still too early for an eleventh generation.
2. iPad mini 7: possibly late this year
In 2021, the iPad mini received the biggest upgrade since the introduction of the small tablet. The tablet got a new look and was equipped with the latest A15 Bionic chip. Moreover, the iPad mini 6 already works with the Apple Pencil 2, so it is already a very complete iPad.
Between 2012 and 2016, the iPad mini received an annual update, making it quite possible that Apple will give the iPad mini another (small) update this year. Exactly what the iPad mini 7 will look like is not yet clear, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the small tablet may appear at the end of this year.
3. Small chance of a new iPad Air in 2023
The iPad Air received a minor update last year. The tablet was equipped with the M1 chip and the new USB-C connection. In terms of content, no huge changes for the iPad Air, so it’s been a while since the tablet really had a major update.
The sixth generation iPad Air will most likely be equipped with the M2 chip, get a Thunderbolt port and an improved camera. Since the tablet is already equipped with a USB-C connection and was newly released last year, we do not expect a new iPad Air in 2023.

4. iPad Pro: Successor not coming until next year
It hasn’t been long since the new iPad Pro was released. In October, Apple launched the seventh generation iPad Pro with M2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 and other minor changes. It will be a while before the M3 chip is introduced, so the new iPad Pro will have to wait a while.
The new iPad Pro will probably get a major upgrade in 2024. The tablet is reportedly getting an OLED screen and a new design. For example, the new iPad Pro is equipped with a glass back, so that the tablet can be charged wirelessly. It’s still a bit of a wait, but the iPad Pro is being given a major overhaul by Apple and is expected around May 2024.
5. 14 inch iPad has been canceled altogether
Apple has been working on a larger model iPad for a long time. This larger model should have had a screen of 14 inches, but the project has been scrapped by Apple according to the latest rumors. As a result, we no longer have to expect a larger iPad in the short term.
This doesn’t mean that Apple isn’t behind the scenes developing a bigger iPad. The company has often confirmed that there is interest in a 14 or even 16 inch iPad. So it’s a matter of patience before the big iPad appears.
