Windows Explorer (finally) gets tabs. In a blog post, Microsoft officially announced the new functionality for Windows 11.
Tabs in Windows Explorer is a feature that has been discussed since the introduction of tabs in the browser. Many other developers were ahead of Microsoft by bringing tabs into an explorer, for example Stardock’s Groupy or Explorer++†Initially, Microsoft was already going to add tabs in Windows 10’s explorer, but for reasons that are unclear, this never happened.
In a recent Windows 11 Insider Build preview, the tabs suddenly popped up. Now they are by Microsoft too officially announced in a blog postâ€
Multiple explorer windows
The tabs in the explorer are very reminiscent of the tabs in the browser. It makes working with multiple explorer windows a lot clearer, because you have everything visible in one explorer window. Microsoft also claims that thanks to smart algorithms, the files you need also appear earlier. Through a new search function and favoring shared files in the cloud where collaboration takes place.
The explorer tabs isn’t the only addition Microsoft announced. There will be an automatic captioning feature for video and integration with Windows 365. A cloud subscription version of Windows.
Windows Insiders can already get started with tabs in the explorer. It is not yet known when the functionality will be rolled out via Windows Update for all Windows 11 users.
