Windows 11 with more monitors: this is how you arrange it

Of course, you can provide a computer with Windows 11 with two or more monitors. Why would you do that? More screen space means you can see and use more programs at a glance, without having to manually switch each time.

In addition, you can have text relevant to your work or study open on one screen and a word processor on the other screen. You can switch active screens with a simple mouse click, without losing the overview. In short: multiple monitors are not a must, but they are a major advantage that allows you to work quickly and accurately. But how do you arrange this on Windows 11 and what do you have to think about? We take you through the possibilities.

Windows 11 and additional monitors

It doesn’t really matter how many monitors are involved. As long as your PC can handle the workload and you have enough ports and screens at your disposal, you can keep adding screens in the same way. Connecting a screen is very simple: this is usually done via an HDMI port on the back or front (on a desktop) or side (on a laptop). But you may also need to use a DisplayPort.

After connecting, Windows 11 immediately switches to the default settings. The additional screen may mirror what is happening on the main screen. We can adjust this via the Settings app. Open Institutions with the Windows key and i and go to System > Display. You will now see two or more monitors. Number 1 indicates the main screen.

You adjust the position of the screens by selecting and dragging the correct screen. This ensures that the mouse crosses well when you move over the edge with the mouse pointer. Are you adjusting anything? Then press To apply† Are you unsure about which monitor to adjust? Then press Identify†

Under the button Identify is the heading Multiple displays† Here you can adjust what the screens should do. You can duplicate or extend the displays or display everything on a single display of your choice. To create one large desktop experience, choose the expand option. Do you work on a laptop, but want to make an external display the main screen? Then set monitor 2 to become the main screen; then you may be able to store your laptop neatly.

Other options

While we’re at it in this menu, take a quick look at some settings. Fill in below Scale and Layout try 125 percent and check whether this produces a calmer picture for you. Mainly menu elements and letters are thus shown larger, making them more visible. Also check the resolution (should it be higher or lower?) and the screen orientation.

Perhaps you have a vertically oriented screen, then it is useful if you set the screen as such. Finally, you may be able to adjust the refresh rate. Windows 11 takes 60 Hertz into account by default, but 120 or 144 Hertz may be possible in your setup.
