Scroll allows you to read articles from websites without ads. The app legally removes advertisements and costs about 4.50 euros per month. More than 300 websites are participating, but Dutch parties are still missing.
How Scroll works
“Thanks to Scroll, users are not bothered by annoying ads without journalists being fired,” is the slogan of the new app. Currently the offer consists of more than 300 (mainly) American websites, such as The Atlantic, Business Insider and Vox. By paying 5 dollars a month (about 4.50 euros), advertisements on these sites disappear like snow in the sun.
The service is available for iPhone, iPad and mac. After you have set up the apps once, you don’t have to worry about them anymore. It also has integrations with social media apps like Facebook and Twitter. When you open an article from a participating website through these apps, the ads will be dropped.
About 70 percent of the amount you give to the subscription service is relinquished to the participating websites. A distribution key based on time is used. The turnover is therefore distributed proportionally. If you mainly read articles from The Atlantic and only occasionally click on a BuzzFeed piece, the former gets more money.
No subscription replacement
It does not replace any subscriptions that the participating parties offer. The app only removes the ads when you read articles via the browser, such as Safari. You cannot suddenly read documents that are currently behind a paywall.
You can try the service for free for 30 days. After that it costs $5 per month. You can pay by credit card or Apple Pay. If you act quickly, you will receive a 50 percent discount on this monthly amount for the first 6 months. It is not known whether Dutch parties will be added to the subscription in the future.
