Withdraw money with your iPhone: it is possible. ABN AMRO customers have recently been able to withdraw money without a bank card. In this article we explain how it works.
Withdraw money with your iPhone: that’s how it works
ABN AMRO has the scoop. It has recently become the first Dutch bank to allow customers to withdraw money without a debit card. All they need is a phone. Via the ABN AMRO app, they can choose an amount at an ATM and approve the transaction by scanning a QR code.
Do you also want to withdraw money with your iPhone? That’s very simple:
- Make sure you get the latest version of the ABN AMRO app on your iPhone;
- Go to a Geldmaat payment terminal and choose the option to pay without a debit card;
- Grab your iPhone and scan the QR code on the screen of the machine;
- Log in to your banking app now (with a code, facial recognition or fingerprint);
- Choose the payment account from which you want to debit and enter the amount;
- Confirm your choices and you’re done.
Withdrawing money with your iPhone is free. So there are no extra costs involved. However, it is important that you use a cash machine from Geldmaat, the joint ATMs of all major banks. You cannot pay with your smartphone at other ATMs.
At the moment, ABN AMRO is the only bank where you can withdraw money with your smartphone. Other banks, such as ING, Rabobank and SNS, have not yet announced whether (and when) the function will be added.
The future is contactless?
As you can read in the step-by-step diagram above, you have to scan a QR code to pin with your iPhone (or other smartphone). This will change in the future. Then you can withdraw money in exactly the same way as, for example, Apple Pay works. In that case, you have to hold the iPhone close to the ATM and then confirm your identity, after which you can use the card.
At the moment, however, this is not yet possible, because first all Geldmaat machines need a special chip reader. If everything goes according to plan, all ATMs will be equipped with this by 2022.
