Overview

Unpack and set up

The WiZ smart fairy light is no less than twenty meters long and works on mains power. The string light comes with an adapter with an on and off button. Setting up the lights is mainly done via the WiZ app, which can be installed for free in the App Store. The WiZ light strip does work with the Home app, but then you only see a limited menu. To use all the functions, you need another new app for your smart lighting. This concerns the following app:

After installing the app, we created a profile, which took little time. Connecting the WiZ smart fairy light is then easy, the app recognizes the device almost immediately. Connecting is easy, within a few minutes the string of lights appeared in the app. To keep an overview, you can then set which room the lights belong to. We had virtually no problems setting up the app.

16 million colors

The app itself works properly, you can choose from a huge number of light modes to adjust the colors. According to WiZ, the smart fairy light has no fewer than 16 million colors. This is certainly reflected in the selection menu, because you can choose different static, dynamic or other color options. It is also possible to choose a color yourself, you are not dependent on the preset scenarios.

Once found, you have plenty of choice when selecting scenarios. You have a color option for almost every situation, so you can choose from candlelight, party, Christmas or Halloween. Do you want a colder appearance? Then go for snow air, deep dive or ocean. What struck us most is how quickly the app works with the lighting. There is virtually no delay, the lights immediately change color after tapping the app.

As a user, we believe you have enough choice with the scenarios in the app. There are neutral colors to choose from, which you can use, for example, as standard Christmas lights. For parties you have more striking color combinations. We really liked having so many options, so that you have suitable mood lighting for every situation. The lights will not look out of place in the garden, but they are also suitable for your Christmas tree. This way you can use them in summer and winter.

Just search in the app

So we have plenty of options when setting the lights, but you will only see them in the WiZ app itself. In the Home app you can only adjust the (brightness of the) colors, but you do not get to see all scenarios. Unfortunately, these options are also quite hidden in the WiZ app itself, so we had to search a bit to find the correct settings. To change the color of the WiZ smart fairy light, you must tap a number of times before the selection menu appears. That took some getting used to when we first started using the lights, but then we automatically got used to it.

The app has all the options you would expect from smart lighting. Not only is it possible to adjust the colors, we could also change the strength of the light. In addition, we could set a timer so that the WiZ smart fairy light turns on or off on the same day every day. Very useful options, which in our opinion should be self-evident if you spend this amount on a string of lights.

For indoors and outdoors

A big advantage of the WiZ smart fairy light is that you can also hang the lights outside. They have a certification of IP44, which means that the string light is splash-proof. You must of course insert the plug indoors (or covered). That can be difficult, because the cord is only twenty meters long. Unfortunately, this is the only version, so for a large garden you will quickly need several light strings or an extension cable.

We have been using the WiZ smart fairy light for a number of days now and during this period it has rained quite a bit. That doesn’t seem to be a problem for the lights, which makes them resistant to splashing water. We are very pleased that you can also use the string of lights outdoors. Christmas lights often go back in the box after the holidays, but these lights can be used all year round. Be careful when hanging, because the string of lights gets tangled very quickly.

WiZ smart fairy light: conclusion

The smart string light from WiZ is a good solution if you are looking for lights for both indoors and outdoors. The WiZ smart fairy light is perfect for the Christmas tree, but in our opinion it is also a cozy addition to your garden or balcony. Setting up the lights is easy, the free app is self-explanatory and works very quickly. Due to the different categories, the layout of the application takes some searching, but you get used to it after frequent use. It is a pity that not all functions of the lights can be used in the Home app, so you remain dependent on the WiZ app.

With the WiZ smart fairy light you can choose from a huge number of light modes, so you have suitable lighting for every situation. The lights even respond to music, a nice feature that works properly. Unfortunately, you only have one size to choose from with the WiZ smart fairy light. For 99.99 euros you have a very complete light cord that you can use all year round. We therefore recommend the smart string light from WiZ without a doubt.
