A new firmware update is available for download for the AirTag. Do you want to install it? We explain how to do that. And we’re taking a guess what’s new.
Firmware update: little clarity
Apple has released an update for the AirTag. It is unfortunately not clear what exactly has been renewed, because Apple has not published any release notes of the new firmware. What we do know is that the software version has been updated to 2.0.24.
Earlier this year, Apple already released an update for the AirTag, in which a new measure against stalking was taken. Since this update, the AirTag beeps louder if it has been labeled ‘unknown’ by your iPhone and has been in your area for a longer period of time. It is quite possible that Apple has also focused on privacy measures in this new firmware update.

Install AirTag update: this is how you do it
You don’t have to do anything to install the AirTag update. Importantly, your iPhone has the latest version of iOS, iOS 16.1.1 was recently released by Apple. Then, to perform the update, make sure the AirTag is close to your iPhone.
Not possible to force the AirTag update. So you just have to be patient until the latest firmware is downloaded. Most importantly, the AirTag is paired with your iPhone. That’s probably already the case, but just to be sure, our explanation
- Go to the ‘Find My’ app;
- Tap on ‘Objects’ and choose ‘Add object’;
- Choose ‘Add AirTag’.
If you then tap the AirTag in the ‘Find My’ app at ‘Objects’, you can see which firmware version you currently have. To do this, you need to tap the gray text below the AirTag name. If you see version 2.0.24 there, your AirTag is up to date!
