Your iPhone will soon show advertisements more often (and that is with these apps)

The Apple apps that are installed by default on your iPhone contain hardly any advertising. You only find them in the App Store for certain searches. Soon more iPhone apps will show advertisements, it seems.

These iPhone apps will soon contain advertising

According to Bloomberg’s trusted Apple insider Mark Gurman, Apple is considering adding ads to more of its iPhone apps. It concerns the apps Maps, Books and Podcast. Apple is said to have already tested search ads in Apple Maps, where you see ads when you search for restaurants, shops or other businesses nearby.

“A Japanese restaurant can then pay money to get to the top of the results if a local user searches for ‘sushi’,” Gurman gives an example. That’s how it works now in the Apple Store. Developers can pay Apple to get to the top of results for a specific search. This result is then highlighted in light blue, with an ‘Advertising’ label next to the number of stars.

Also in Podcast and Books

Apple also wants to introduce the ads to its own Podcast and Books app, says Gurman. This allows publishers to place ads to get their content higher in search results. The Maps, Podcasts and Books apps are currently ad-free.

And although the App Store already has advertisements in the Search tab, we can expect more advertisements there too. Gurman says Apple is expanding its ads to the Today tab and app download pages. In the ‘Today’ tab, they will presumably appear as larger cards with ‘Ad’ under the app’s name. On individual pages, there will be a “You might also like” section, with the ad highlighted in blue.

Only Apple apps

Incidentally, Apple seems to leave it at its own app. From 2010 to 2016, Apple also added ads to third-party iPhone apps, using the iAd advertising service. This was a flop and Gurman doesn’t expect Apple to advertise in other apps again.
