We still have to be patient, but in the foreseeable future the SMT will be back at KTM. During test work, our man captured the 890 SMT on camera.
Judging by the pictures, the prototype already appears to be in an advanced stage, which could mean that the bike will be released this year, but we rather expect that it will not be until 2024 that KTM will launch the 890 SMT going to launch.
The 890 SMT, which KTM has been working on for almost three years, is a Supermotard based on the current new Adventure, which will be positioned between the 890 Adventure and the 890 Duke. Clearly visible are the long suspension travel à la the Adventure, while the 17″ wheels with sporty street rubber are borrowed from the Duke.
What else can be deduced from the photos? That the bike is free of all the off-road stuff that the Adventure does have – no engine protection, less fairing around the block, a completely new gas tank and different mirrors than the Adventure. The only thing that has been taken over from the Adventure is the short windshield of the 890 Adventure R.
In terms of bike section, the geometry seems to be a lot sportier than the Adventure, much closer to the Duke. An 890 Duke, but with a higher seat, wind protection and significantly longer suspension travel. In terms of parts choice, we see the same WK APEX suspension and KTM-labeled brakes as the other 890 models.
When the bike will be unveiled by KTM is not yet known, but judging by the advanced stage of this prototype, we are betting on sometime at the end of this year.
