BMW will pull the curtain on the new generation 5-series in 2023. It will undoubtedly get a set of plug-in hybrid powertrains and for the horsepower enthusiasts, BMW has a new M5 in the development rooms. That too will be a plug-in hybrid. The M5, endowed with electric power, can be seen in action in this fresh set of photos on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
With the XM, BMW presented its first plug-in hybrid M model, but it will certainly not be the last. The M5 also gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain. BMW actually has to. The sporty top version of the C-class – which operates one step lower on the status ladder – now produces 680 hp and 1,020 Nm thanks to a plug-in hybrid powertrain. A world of difference with the current M5, which in its most powerful form kicks up to 635 hp.
It is not inconceivable that the new BMW M5 will have the same powertrain as the XM. The XM has a 489 hp 4.4 V8 that, thanks to a 197 hp electric motor, is good for a system power of 653 hp and 800 Nm. An extra potent Label Red flavor will come from the XM in 2023, which will generate 748 hp and 1,000 Nm thanks to a 585-hp eight-cylinder and the almost 200 hp of electrical power.
How do we know for sure that the BMW M5 in these photos is a plug-in hybrid? First of all, this test sample gives that away with the Electrified Vechicle sticker on the front door. In addition, the M5 has a tailgate on its left front screen, which indicates a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new BMW 5-series is planned for next year, the youngest M5 will follow a little later.
