Resize window in Windows

Resize window in Windows A (program) window in Windows can take up the entire screen, but also only part of it. Decide for yourself what the window looks like.

Open programs on a Windows computer in a new window. Usually, the window automatically takes up the entire screen. The window is then maximized. Fortunately, the window can also be smaller or even not visible at all.

Determine the display via a number of buttons at the top right of the window (of a program).

  • Minimize the window with the ‘Minimize’ button Minimize Window.
The window disappears completely, but the program is still open. This is indicated by the blue marking under the icon in the Taskbar. Bring the window back to the front by clicking the icon.
  • Shrink the window with the ‘Shrink’ button Shrink window.

The window now fills only part of the screen. You can adjust the size of this reduced window:

    • Hover the mouse pointer over the right edge of the window until the mouse pointer changes to a double arrow.
    • Click and hold the mouse button while dragging the mouse.
    • Release the mouse button when the window is the correct size.
    • Do the same for the bottom of the window.
    • Resize the side and bottom simultaneously by standing in the corner and dragging.
  • Make the window fill the screen with the ‘Maximize’ button maximize window.
  • Close the window (and usually the program immediately) via the ‘Close’ button Close window.

The window size can also be controlled with keyboard shortcuts.

  • Maximize the window: Press the Windows key (key with logo) and the up arrow simultaneously.
  • Minimize the window: Press the Windows key and the down arrow twice.
  • Minimize all windows except the active window: Press the Windows key and the Home key.
