For years, Netflix has been releasing most series with a full season in one go, but that has now changed.
Netflix no longer publishes series per season
Netflix is more or less responsible for the ‘bing’ of series. That is because Netflix has always made a full season available in one go. But lately, seasons appear more and more in multiple parts, as is the case with most other streaming services.
For example, Apple TV+, Disney+ and others regularly opt for weekly releases. Instead of holding on to the original model, Netflix seems to be increasingly following the path of the competitors. Weekly releases are currently still rare on Netflix, but a number of large titles have been in parts every season in recent years. This happened, for example, with Stranger Things and The Crown.

Different reasons
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria recently continued Deadline asked about this new strategy. She says it was initially caused by Covid and by strikes, but that it is partly due to the makers of the series. They sometimes want a break between episodes because they think it is a natural moment for that. “So Netflix does not have a fixed strategy for releasing a season, it also depends on what is best for the series in question,” said Bajaria.
It is indeed true that Netflix split a season for the first time at the time of Covid. But that this continued to happen after that is apparently because the makers of the series wanted this.
According to Bajaria, the new strategy has had no negative consequences. The fact that Netflix is holding on seems to support that. Whether viewers like it or not that Netflix makes a season available in parts, it ensures that subscribers stay longer. The chance that they will continue to wait for the following episodes is quite high.
