BMW has a new generation of the 5 Series in the development rooms. Of course, the new Fünfer also comes with a fierce M5 and it is that executioner of a sports sedan that we see for the first time in these spy photos. The most important news: the M5 will be a plug-in hybrid.

BMW is, of course, bringing a slew of electrified powertrains to the new 5 Series. So count on plug-in hybrid powertrains in various power variants. For the first time in the history of the 5 Series, the M5 will also be a plug-in! In these photos you see that plug-in hybrid M5 for the first time.

The new BMW M5 in these photos leaves no doubt about its powertrain. On the doors we read the text ‘Hybrid Test Vehicle’ and who is not convinced by this, should take a look at the left front screen. The tailgate is clearly visible in it. The clearly intense braking that hides behind the wheels, together with the wide wheel arches and the double exhaust pipes placed on either side of the rear bumper, prove that this is the new sporty top version of the new 5 Series.

V8 splendor

Does the arrival of a plug-in hybrid powertrain mean that the M5 will exchange its mighty V8 for a six or even four-cylinder? You would expect that, but we are not assuming for the time being. With the XM Concept, BMW looked ahead to a mighty sporty giant of an SUV, a car that had a plug-in hybrid powertrain with V8 as a power station. So it could just be that BMW also hangs that hardware in the nose of the M5.

If the new BMW M5 actually gets a plug-in hybrid powertrain with V8, then you can count on a power of around 750 hp. A bizarre amount of semi-electric horsepower. In comparison: the current BMW M5 is 635 hp strong in its strongest form. 750 hp seems excessive, but the current M5 in its lightest form already weighs a good 1,800 kilos, its successor will certainly not be lighter due to the plug-in hybrid hardware.

We expect the new BMW 5 Series on the market sometime in 2023. The M5 is likely to be on the roll for a year later.
