Few car brands sound as American as Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick. As deep as Buick’s American roots go, so little American is this brand’s electric SUV. This is the Buick Electra E5!

Those who keep a close eye on the reports on AutoWeek.nl may still remember the Electra E5. In November AutoWeek was able to show you the first photos of the Buick Electra E5, a brand new electric SUV-like that will be launched in China. At the time we could already report that the Electa E5 will be 4.89 meters long and 1.91 meters wide and will have a wheelbase of 2.95 meters. Buick has now presented the Electra E5 itself and those dimensions appear to be correct.

The Buick Electra E5 is the first of a new Buick electric label. At least, in China. In China, Buick electric cars will now go through life under the Electra umbrella. The addition ‘E5’ therefore does not refer to the type of petrol that disappears into the tank, but to the positioning of the SUV. Somewhere in the middle of the intended range. Incidentally, Buick used the model name from the 1950s to 1990 for various generations of highly positioned models, but it now returns to an electric SUV.

From the outside, the Buick Electra E5 with its flat LED daytime running lights and the actual headlights one floor below it fits perfectly with other new Buick models such as this Envista. The electric five-seater sits on General Motors’ Ultium platform, a modular electric base that’s also used by cars like the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, and that’s also used on cars like the Cadillac Celestiq, Chevrolet Blazer, Equinox and Silverado EV and even the Honda Prologue gets a spot. There are no further technical specifications.

We do not expect the Buick Electra E5 to be marketed in the United States, making this electric SUV developed by the SAIC-GM partnership a lot less American than you might expect.

There is more interesting Buick news for the enthusiast. We can also show you the new LaCrosse, because we found photos of that sedan in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology (photos 6 and 7). The LaCrosse that Buick is currently selling (photos 8 and 9) is a more than 5 meter long sedan that you can see as the big brother of the Opel Insignia (Buick Regal), but with a Buick design sauce. The current model was presented in 2017 and will soon be introduced to a new generation. Although the LaCrosse gets a completely new body, the platform of the model is unchanged. The new Buick LaCrosse also has a wheelbase of 2.91 meters.

General Motors would also consider returning to Europe with the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac. Should Buick be added to that list? Let us know in the comments!
