At the beginning of September there was a big fuss about the iPhone 12 in France. According to the authorities, this causes too much radiation. iOS 17.1 contains the solution to this problem. Apple has adjusted this.
Radiation problem iPhone 12
Earlier this month, Apple’s iPhone 12 made headlines in France for a potential radiation problem. French authorities determined that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the iPhone 12 exceeded legal limits. Tests conducted by French regulators revealed that the iPhone 12 had a radiation level of 5.74 watts per kilogram of body weight, significantly higher than the permitted 4 W/kg.
These findings raised concerns and speculation that other European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, could consider a similar ban on the iPhone 12. This put Apple in a race against time to solve the problem and keep the smartphone on the market.
The iOS 17.1 solution
Apple quickly responded to the radiation problem by developing a software update included in iOS 17.1. This update is specifically intended to meet the requirements of the French testing protocol, which requires lower transmission power when the iPhone is outside the body, for example placed on a ‘static surface’.
With the iOS 17.1 update, the iPhone 12 will no longer increase the allowed transmission power when worn near your body, such as when the phone is simply lying on a table. However, this adjustment may result in a slight decrease in mobile performance in situations where the mobile signal is weak. However, the majority of users will not notice any difference due to this change in transmission power.
Do not worry!
Let’s just make it clear that the whole ‘radiation thing’ with the iPhone 12 really doesn’t pose a major health risk, according to the latest scientific insights. The radiation that everyone is so concerned about is actually just electromagnetic radiation and it most likely only creates a little heat near the phone. Even if we look back at those earlier higher radiation measurements with the iPhone 12, the effect on our health would have been minimal.
In short, Apple has responded quickly to the radiation unrest in France with the iOS 17.1 update. While this update may have a small impact on the iPhone 12’s performance in specific situations, it is not expected to significantly impact our user experience. And the best news is that we really don’t have to worry about radiation as a serious health hazard, as current science tells us. Apple has always been committed to the safety and satisfaction of our users, and this rapid response is living proof of that
