The current generation 5-series lasts about five years and since the model has already been facelifted, Bavaria is working hard on a completely new generation. The new BMW 5-series will also get an all-electric variant and the i5 can be seen clearly from all angles in these spy photos.

The current BMW 5-series was facelifted in 2020 and so the model is in its second phase of life. A generation 5-series usually lasts about 7 to 8 years, so the development of a new 5-series is in full swing. In the same way that the i4 is an electric version of the 4-series Gran Coupé and the i7 that of the 7-series, the new BMW 5 series will also get an all-electric variant: the i5.

The BMW i5 that you see in these photos will soon make life difficult for the Mercedes-Benz EQE and the Audi A6 e-tron to be released around 2024. It is striking how Mercedes-Benz and BMW emphatically opt for their own approach. Where Mercedes-Benz has made an electric model with the EQE, which is completely separate from the E-class, on its own platform, the i5 will be a variant of the new 5-series that shares its body and platform with the types with combustion engines.

BMW 5 Series

There is not much to say about the powertrain of the i5. However, the appearance is interesting. BMW takes new steps on the pronounced design path it is currently treading and presents the new funfer a slightly sloping snout containing an apparently modest version of the kidney grille. The new 5-series – and therefore also the i5 – gets a striking hanging butt. The tailgate slopes strongly, no doubt a nod to the rear of the 5-series E12. We expect the market launch of the new 5 Series in the second half of 2023 or in the spring of 2024.
