Google stops free legacy version of G Suite – now what?

Google has announced that it will definitively pull the plug on an old, free version of the G Suite as of July 1, 2022. What does this mean to you?

Probably not much will change for you! The changes relate to a very old G Suite subscription, which Google offered free to schools and businesses in 2006. Six years later, it was decided to no longer offer the package free of charge.

Since 2012, it has therefore no longer been possible to take out the free subscription for the G Suite. It has always been possible to continue to use the package if you had already closed it. That will therefore come to an end on 1 July of this year.

The changes that Google is making will therefore have no impact on the consumer version of what is now called Workspace, the version that you presumably use. So you can continue to use Google services such as Gmail, Spreadsheets, Docs and Drive for free.

business subscription

Business users who still have such an old subscription have to switch to a paid version of Workspace, although Google also has some free packages especially for educational institutions and foundations. For businesses, there’s Google Apps for Business with 24/7 support, enhanced security, and more storage.

If you still have an old G Suite subscription, you must make the switch before May 1 to continue using your account and all Google services without interruptions. Google currently offers three premium plans for professionals.

Have you found a subscription that best suits your situation? then log in and select the appropriate subscription. If you have not taken any action before May 1, Google will choose a subscription that best suits your current use. If you don’t have up-to-date billing information, Google will cancel your old subscription.

Transfer data

Google also offers users who do not want to upgrade the option to switch to another service. You can then export all your data with the takeoutservice of the company.

This service is not only intended for business users who do not want to switch to Workspace, but for everyone who no longer wants to use Google’s services. By exporting your data, you will not lose any data from Gmail, Google Photos, My Maps (Google Maps), Contacts and much more.

With Google Takeout you can archive all that data for later import into another service, or just as keep your own backup.

Takeout makes it easy to export your Google data.
