The iPad 2022 has now received a USB-C, but unfortunately that does not mean that this port is also faster. In fact, the speed to transfer files is the same as with the previous iPad.
iPad 2022 with new USB-C port (and old-fashioned Lightning speed)
The iPad 2022 has received a new charging port. The previous iPad (2021) still had a Lightning connection, but this year’s iPad has a USB-c port.
Now you would expect that this USB-c connection is also a lot faster than the Lightning port, but nothing could be further from the truth. Reviews show that the USB-C port is limited to USB 2.0 speeds. These are data rates of up to 480 Mbps, and remarkably, this is the same maximum speed that the original Lightning adapter could handle.
It gets even better, because every other iPad with usb-c has a much better throughput. For example, the iPad Pro models with an M1 and M2 chip have support for Thunderbolt 3 (maximum speed up to 40 Gbps). The iPad Air 2022 can handle speeds of up to 10 Gbps. The iPad Air 2020 and the iPad mini 2021 can handle up to 5 Gbps.
If you are going to use the iPad 2022 for surfing, drawing, streaming, etc., then the lower speed of the USB-C connection is of course no problem. Do you regularly use an external drive or do you often transfer files to or from your iPad? Then it gets a bit more annoying. The larger the files, the longer it will take to forward them.
buy iPad 2022
Are you looking for the right iPad? Then the iPad 2022 (€ 589) is an excellent choice. But even for a budget iPad, the colorful tablet from 2022 is still quite pricey.
Want to spend a little less? Then the iPad 2021 (€ 369) is a better choice. You have to take into account that you have an iPad with the older look (and a home button).
