The iPhone 16 is still a while away, but according to the first rumors, the iPhone 16 Pro will receive a new version of Face ID. What do we know so far? And what does that mean for the front camera.
After the notch, the Dynamic Island also disappears with the iPhone 16 Pro
Apple introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This new camera hole at the top of the screen replaced the old notch, and dynamically changes size. For example, if you play music or run a timer, the dynamic island will provide you with information about these activities. The shape of the Dynamic Island then differs per activity.

The Dynamic Island is expected to come to all iPhone 15 models, including the regular iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus. With this, Apple says goodbye to the notch, but it seems very likely that the Dynamic Island will soon sink again. The iPhone 16 Pro is reportedly no longer getting Dynamic Island at all. How does this work?
iPhone 16 Pro gets new Face ID under the screen
Apple has already filed several patents indicating that the company is working on a new Face ID sensor that is hidden under the screen. As a result, you no longer see the Face ID camera and the Dynamic Island becomes superfluous. The new series of iPhones that will be released next year therefore reportedly no longer have a Dynamic Island.
However, this only applies to the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The Dynamic Island was also only introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) last year, so it is expected that Apple will continue this line with the iPhone 16 Pro (Max). With later iPhones, Apple even plans to make the front of the phone completely screen.
The front camera is not going away anytime soon
Unlike the Face ID camera, the front camera will remain visible for the time being. Apple’s ultimate goal is to also hide the front camera under the screen, but this must be done without loss of quality. The technology does not allow this for the time being, so we do not have to expect a front camera hidden under the screen for the time being.

According to rumors, Apple is working on such a hidden camera, but it still needs quite some time. A hidden front camera is not expected until 2026 (or later), so that the front of the iPhone consists entirely of screen. This would then be with the iPhone 18 at the earliest. So just a little patience.
