Apple is reportedly working on a feature where the iPhone and Apple Watch will recognize if you’re involved in a car accident. The emergency services are then automatically activated.
iPhone calls emergency services after car accident
The news is reported by a journalist from the renowned The Wall Street Journal. Apple is said to be planning to launch the ‘crash detection’ in 2022. We may therefore see it in the next major iPhone update: iOS 16. The function uses various sensors – including the accelerometer – to recognize car accidents. This also looks for a sudden spike in G-force.
The Wall Street Journal Apple also writes that Apple has been testing the feature for a year. Tim Cook’s company does this by collecting anonymous data from iPhone and Apple Watch users. In total, Apple is said to have already detected one million suspected traffic accidents.
The newspaper still has a hand in it. The feature is in a testing phase and there is no guarantee that we will actually see the ‘crash detection’ in an iOS release.
SOS emergency message
The Apple Watch already has a feature that is very similar to this: fall detection. The Watch recognizes it when you have made a hard knock. If you do not move for a minute, the emergency services will be activated automatically.
With the iPhone it is also already possible to quickly contact 112. If you press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons at the same time, a slider appears with SOS emergency notification. If you swipe it to the right, your iPhone will call emergency services.
