Two new iPads have been on the market since this fall: the iPad 2021 and iPad mini 2021. But the iPad 2020 and iPad mini 2019 are also interesting, which are cheaper. What is the price difference and which iPad should you choose?
iPad (mini) 2021, or an older model?
The Apple Store has two iPads richer since September: the iPad 2021 and iPad mini 2021. The first is the cheapest tablet that Apple sells, the second is the most compact iPad. The tablets have nice improvements over their predecessor, but they are also more expensive. So should you choose the newer or older model?
iPad 2021 vs iPad 2020
In September, Apple unveiled the ninth generation of the regular iPad. It looks exactly the same as its predecessor from 2020, but there are interesting improvements.
For example, there’s a much better selfie camera, which is ideal if you use the iPad a lot for video calling. With the iPad 2020 you have to make do with a 1.2 megapixel camera, with the iPad 2021 that is tenfold: 12 megapixels. This is an ultra-wide angle camera, which has a wide field of view of 120 degrees.
The iPad 2020 has an A12 Bionic chip. The iPad 2021 has an A13 Bionic chip on board, which is about twenty percent faster. You notice this especially when you perform heavier tasks on the iPad, such as multitasking, gaming or editing videos. Another difference is the screen. The iPad 2021 supports True Tone, where the white balance automatically adjusts to your environment.

So there are differences between the iPad 2021 and iPad 2020, but they are not particularly significant. If you don’t plan on using the iPad’s selfie camera a lot, you’ll be fine with the older model, which is about sixty euros cheaper. At the time of writing, it is the cheapest at the Mediamarkt:

iPad mini 2021 vs iPad mini 2019
The iPad mini was completely redesigned this year. The iPad mini 2021 has a modern design, with thin screen edges and no home button. The iPad mini 2019 still has the old design with home button. With the iPad mini 2021, the screen is also larger: 8.3 inches instead of 7.9 inches. Nevertheless, the iPad mini 2021 is slightly more compact than the iPad mini 2019 due to the thin screen edges.
The iPad mini 2021 is also completely up to date on the inside. It contains a super-fast A15 Bionic chip, the same as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. Furthermore, the iPad mini 2021 has a USB-c connection instead of Lightning. This allows you to connect more peripherals, such as a monitor.
