The MacBook Air 2022 is Apple’s latest ultraportable laptop. But is it wise to opt for more RAM or storage? Usually not and iPhoned tells you why in this MacBook Air 2022 buying advice!
Buying advice MacBook Air 2022
The MacBook Air 2022 is the successor to the MacBook Air 2020. The most striking features of the new laptop are the design (it looks a lot like the latest MacBook Pro) and the M2 chip.
This M2 chip makes the MacBook Air 2022 18 percent faster than its predecessor, according to Apple. It doesn’t stop there, because the graphics chip has also been improved. This allows the new Air to handle heavy graphical tasks like video editing better.
You also get a bigger and better screen, nicer sound and a MagSafe 3 charger. Also nice: the MacBook Air 2022 available in different colors. You can find all the specifications of the MacBook Air 2022 in the image below.
More memory or larger SSD: worth the extra price?
The MacBook Air 2022 is available in multiple configurations. You get 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in the form of an SSD as standard. For a doubling of the memory to 16GB you pay 230 euros more. Do you want a 512GB SSD? Then another 230 euros is added.
You even have the option to slightly upgrade the M2 chip to an M2 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU. This gives you a little more speed with graphics-heavy programs. The standard MacBook Air 2022 comes with an M2 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU. A MacBook Air 2022 with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD will quickly cost you just under 2000 euros.
When you buy the MacBook Air 2022 with the best possible configuration (the slightly better M2 chip, 24GB memory and 2TB SSD storage) you are no less than 3019 euros lost!
Consider a 2021 MacBook Pro
If you look a little further and pick up the MacBook Pro 2021 (14 inch), you get an M1 Pro chip (which is often even faster than the M2), with 16GB of memory and 512 SSD storage for 2249 euros. You also get a ProMotion screen and better sound. Want to know more about the MacBook Pro 2021? Then check the article below.

So is more RAM or storage worth the extra cost with the MacBook Air 2022? Not really. For the additional price, it is better to buy a better MacBook Pro 2021 with an M1 Pro.
Only if you plan to work a lot with large files, it is sometimes smart to take a slightly larger SSD. But even then, you can always decide to get an external SSD for your large files or switch to the MacBook Pro. Incidentally, the standard amount of memory of 8GB is sufficient for almost all tasks on the MacBook Air 2022.
Incidentally, this does not mean that the MacBook Air 2022 is a bad laptop. In the standard configuration, you have the best ultraportable laptop from Apple you can buy. Want more than the stock hardware, though? Then you better go for a MacBook Pro.
