Migraines can significantly limit your everyday life. In this article, we will show you what you can do about it and which home remedies are suitable.
Migraines are usually one-sided, severe headaches that can sometimes even be debilitating. They are often accompanied by sensitivity to light and noise or nausea. Sometimes the migraine attack is announced by an aura. Since the causes of migraine attacks are different for each sufferer, different remedies help.
If you notice that your headaches are chronic, you should definitely seek medical advice. However, some home remedies can at least provide relief. Here are some migraine remedies you can try.
Home remedies for acute migraine attacks
Home remedies have the advantage that they usually do not have any significant side effects. On the other hand, their effectiveness is usually not scientifically proven. What you can do if you have a sudden migraine attack:
- Massage or dab a few drops of peppermint oil onto your temples and/or sore forehead. The oil has a cooling effect on the skin. However, make sure that no essential oil gets into your eyes. This can irritate sensitive skin, so it’s best to test it on the crook of your elbow first.
- Cool your forehead with a wet washcloth or a cold compress wrapped in a towel. A warm shower can also help with migraines.
- Take a cold arm or foot bath. With an arm bath, you immerse your arms in water that is about 15 degrees Celsius for about ten seconds and then warm them up again by rubbing or moving. With a foot bath, you hold your feet in water that is about 15 degrees Celsius for about 15 to 30 seconds. Afterwards, do not dry your feet; you put on thick socks and go for a walk.
- Drink medicinal herbal teas such as primrose, ginger or willow bark tea.
-
Pay attention to your diet, some foods can trigger or worsen a migraine attack. For example, caffeine or cold ice cream can trigger a migraine attack.
How to prevent migraines
Migraines can be triggered by various factors, but there are ways to reduce their frequency and intensity through targeted prevention:
- Make sure you always drink enough fluids. On hot days, you can drink a little more. Water and unsweetened teas, such as rooibos tea, are particularly good.
- Regular endurance sports such as swimming, cycling or hiking can help.
-
Routine structures your day. Go to bed and start work at similar times. Changing times cause stress in the body and can be a cause of migraines.
- Relaxation techniques such as yoga or Pilates can also prevent migraines.
Possible causes of migraines
Sudden headaches, limited vision, nausea or sensitivity to light are possible precursors of a migraine. The triggers of migraines vary from person to person. The following causes can trigger migraine attacks:
-
Stress or restlessness can make you more irritable and therefore prone to migraine attacks.
-
Changes in the weather, especially changes in air pressure.
-
Overstimulation, hypoglycemia, an irregular daily routine or a disturbed sleep pattern are other possible triggers. Often it is a combination of several causes that cannot be precisely identified.
