In October, a car was broken into more often. This is the highest number since the outbreak of the corona crisis in March last year.

Nearly 4,400 cars were broken into in October, according to an analysis of police figures by LocalFocus. The provinces of Noord-Holland, Noord-Brabant and Overijssel had a record number of car burglaries last month since the start of the corona crisis. Also in several municipalities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Breda, Eindhoven and Hengelo, car crackers were most often active since the outbreak of corona last month. The municipality of Utrecht has had relatively the most car burglaries so far this year: about 76 per ten thousand inhabitants. Also in Nieuwegein, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Rijswijk a relatively large amount is stolen from cars.

Up to and including October of this year, the police registered nearly 31,000 thefts from a car. That is less than last year, when almost 38,000 car squats were made in the same months. Zeeland, Drenthe, Groningen and Gelderland in particular have significantly fewer car burglaries this year. Especially in February, March and April this year, little was stolen from cars. There was also a curfew during these months.

Cars are often broken into to steal loose equipment, such as laptops. However, it also regularly happens that thieves target the infotainment or navigation system that is built into the car. Airbags are also sometimes stolen, these are often shipped to other parts of the world to be put back in a car during damage repairs.
