Move files in Finder

When organizing your files in the Finder, you probably want to organize certain files into other folders. But how do you easily move your files on Mac? Dragging is the keyword.

The Finder is the place where you can find all your files and organize them yourself. When you want to move a file (or several) it is useful to display both folders. So the folder where your file is now and the folder you want to move it to. To move files to a different folder on a Mac with OS X 10.9 Mavericks or later:

  • Open the Finder. To do this, click the smiling face icon on the left side of the Dock.
  • Browse to the folder where the file is located.
  • Open a second Finder window. Click at the top of the screen to do so Archive.
  • click on New Finder Window. A second window opens.
  • Browse to the folder where you want to move the file.
  • Align the windows so that you can see both folders. You move a window by clicking in the gray or white area at the top of the window and holding the mouse button while moving the mouse (and thus the window).
  • Now move the file by clicking and holding the mouse button while dragging the file to the other folder (which you already had open in the second Finder window).
  • Want to move more files at once? That is also possible. Then hold down the cmd key while clicking on the different files. Once you have selected what you want, you can drag and drop this set of files as described in the step above.

Watch how it works in the video below. The video was shot in Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, but the steps are the same on higher versions of the operating system.
