Siri is getting a major update and is now finally becoming much smarter

We already knew that Siri will eventually receive a major update and become much smarter, but a lot more has now become known about this.

The update that will make Siri smarter is possible because Apple and Google are working together. The next generation of Siri will be controlled with modified Gemini models and The Information has now announced more details about this.

Reported last fall Mark Gurman from Bloomberg that Apple and Google were close to reaching an agreement on the improved AI Siri, which would be powered by a modified Gemini model. Now Apple and Google have confirmed the agreement in a joint statement:

“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year. After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”

“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year partnership under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will support future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year. After careful evaluation, Apple has determined that Google’s AI technology is the most suitable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will bring to Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while retaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”

This is what you can expect

Thanks to the update, Siri will be able to do the following things this coming spring:

• Answer factual general knowledge questions in a conversational manner.
• Tell more stories.
• Provide more emotional support.
• Help with more tasks, such as booking travel.
• Create documents in the Notes app, such as recipes.

According to the report, Apple plans to announce additional Siri features at WWDC in June, including:

• Knowledge of older conversations.
• Proactive suggestions based on information from apps, such as the Calendar app.

Apple previously announced that after the update, Siri would have a better understanding of a user’s personal context, in addition to screen awareness and deeper app-specific controls. That lines up with many of the possibilities that are coming, according to the report.

The report goes on to say that the latest prototype of the more personalized Siri will not have Google or Gemini branding. Apple can fine-tune Gemini’s model to ensure Siri responds to questions in a way Apple wants.
