Siri on your iPhone will soon become a lot smarter thanks to Google

Apple is working on a version of Siri that is much better and smarter, and according to the latest rumors this is made possible thanks to Google.

Siri will soon become much smarter thanks to Google

According to Bloomberg Apple is developing a version of Siri that is more powerful, smarter, and powered by Google Gemini. Apple will pay Google about $1 billion per year for a 1.2 trillion-parameter AI model developed by Google.

Parameters are a measure of how a model understands and answers questions. More parameters generally means more options, but training and architecture also play a role. Bloomberg says that Google’s model leaves the parameter level of Apple’s current models far behind. The current cloud-based version of Apple Intelligence uses 150 billion parameters.

Google Gemini

Apple will use Gemini for functions related to summarizing, planning, and executing multi-step tasks. But Apple models are also used for some Siri functions. The AI model that Google is developing for Apple will run on Apple’s private servers. As a result, Google does not have access to the company’s data.

Gemini uses a so-called Mixture-of-Experts architecture: although it has more than a trillion parameters in total, only a fraction of them are activated for each search. This makes a large computing capacity possible without incurring high processing costs.

Apple and Google

Apple has considered using its own AI models for the new version of Siri that is smarter and has Anthropic considered. The company ultimately decided to choose Gemini because Anthropic’s costs were too high. Moreover, Apple already has a partnership with Google for search results. Google pays Apple around $20 billion a year to be the default search engine on Apple devices.

Apple nevertheless wants to continue working on its own models and switch to an internal solution as soon as its own large language models have sufficient capacity. Apple is now working on a cloud-based model with 1 trillion parameters that could be ready as early as 2026.

We expect a version of Siri that is much better and smarter in iOS 26.4. That update will be available in the spring of 2026. If you don’t want to miss any of this, sign up for our newsletter. Then we will automatically keep you informed!
