Strolling in front of the tunnel

Freight traffic congests many highways. Therefore, part of it is to be relocated to the tracks - with a new rail connection between the North Sea and northern Italy. But construction along the Rhine has come to a standstill. Why?

Where the engine noise is deafening and the air is stifling, you count exactly. An average of 2,820 trucks cross the Gotthard and San Bernardino tunnels every day. This means that almost 90 percent of all trucks that pass through the Swiss Alps drive through these two tunnels. In 2021 there were a total of around 860,000 trucks.
