Tesla sells whistle ‘for whistleblowers’

A very strange product was briefly available in the American online Tesla Shop. For $50, you could purchase the Cyberwhistle, a Cybertruck-shaped whistle that actually served as a hidden critique of “whistleblowers” and Apple.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is more than once surprising. That manifests itself in more than one controversial Tweet from time to time, although Twitter also plays a small part in the Tesla guru’s next splurge.

For a short time you could buy the Cyberwhistle in the American webshop of Tesla for $50, converted about €44. The now sold-out but still available in the online Tesla store Cyberwhistle is exactly what it seems: a whistle in the shape of the upcoming and extremely angular electric Cybertruck of the brand. Tesla describes the Cyberwhistle as a “[…] Polished premium collectible in surgical stainless steel with an integrated attachment point for added versatility.” So you can hang it on a string around your neck.

The how and why of the Cyberwhistle is possibly even more striking. On the one hand, the Cyberwhistle is a parody of the Apple Cloth introduced by tech giant Apple, a cleaning cloth that costs about €25 for the screens of Apple products such as Macbooks and iPhones. Elon Musk sent out a message on Twitter advising not to waste your money on “[…] that crazy Apple Cloth” but to buy the Cyberwhistle.

In addition, the whistle seems to act as a sneer at whistleblowers. Tesla received bad news several times due to employees who raised the alarm about alleged abuses within the company. “Blow the whistle on Tesla!” the CEO wrote on Twitter, referring to the Cyberwhistle in the Tesla web store. Of course, this refers not only to the literal function of the whistle, but also to whistleblowers who ring the bell.
