Tesla is well on its way to expanding its business in Germany. Tesla production is about to start in Grünheide, near Berlin. In addition, Tesla also wants to build a new battery factory east of Berlin. The car manufacturer now waives state aid for this.
The German Ministry of Economy confirms Tesla’s decision to news agency DPA. It is not clear why Tesla is withdrawing the application for the subsidy. According to the Reuters news agency, the amount involved is €1.14 billion. The financing had already been approved by the European Union. Despite the withdrawal of the application, Tesla wants to continue with its plans for the battery and recycling plant in the state of Brandenburg. Tesla still seems to receive a subsidy from the state for the battery factory. The amount of that subsidy is unknown.
The battery factory will be located in the vicinity of Tesla’s already built car factory, or so the plan is. There was and still is a lot to do about that car factory. Tesla itself says that German production can probably start this year, but is still waiting for the green light from the local government. He must first deal with all objections – and there are many – before the project can be dealt a blow. However, there is a good chance that that approval process will be completed before the end of this year.
