Every now and then, movies or series appear on Netflix that you really love, series that you can finish in one sigh. With the streaming service you can indicate with a thumbs up that you like the series, but with real top series such a rating is of course a bit meager. That’s why Netflix has adjusted its rating system. You can now give two thumbs up if you really like a series.
A few weeks ago, Netflix hinted that the rating system would be overhauled. The new way to rate movies and series has now been launched worldwide and Netflix has also provided some insight into what it means to give two thumbs up to just one.
Improvement in recommendations
In a blog post, Netflix explains the effect of the new rating system. A thumbs up or down is a good way to let the streaming service know which movies or series you like or don’t like. This allows Netflix to create a profile of you that matches your personal taste. Or in other words: you get to see similar films and series that you may also like.
“But we noticed that sometimes users had stronger feelings,” said Netflix’s Christine Doig-Cardet. “By offering an extra option, users can indicate if they really like a movie or series. And that way we can make suggestions that are even closer to the viewer’s preference.”
two thumbs up
Where you normally see suggestions from similar films and series, Netflix takes it one step further if you choose the two thumbs up. For example, if you are a Bridgerton fan, you will see films or series that feature the same actors or that are made by the same production house.
You see the new thumbs immediately when you start a movie or series, in the place where you find the original thumb. On your desktop, go with your mouse to the thumb icon and you will immediately find the three options (Not for me† I like this one and I love it† The rating options are available for every show and movie and you can adjust the rating at any time as before.
More changes
Netflix says it will make several changes this year to make the streaming service more personal. The goal is to give users more control over their experience with Netflix.
Netflix must also take action to bind users. In the first quarter of this year, the streaming service lost 200,000 paying users and Netflix expects another 2 million users to cancel their subscriptions in the current quarter.
