Typing with the Apple Vision Pro – this is what it looks like (spoiler: bizarre)

The Apple Vision Pro is, according to the company, a ‘spatial computing system’, or ‘spatial computer’. So you can tap texts on it. Typing on the Vision Pro is done in a very special way. We tell you how!

Vision Pro unveiled by Apple

The rumors had been going on for years and at WWDC 2023 the time had finally come: Apple unveiled the Vision Pro, the company’s first VR glasses. The Vision Pro is also called a spatial computer by Apple. And that’s not surprising: the headset takes over the tasks of your Mac, iPhone and Apple TV, so you can actually do everything with the glasses. That is also allowed with a starting price of $ 3499.

Due to the high price, the glasses are primarily intended for companies. The Vision Pro can therefore be used to open multiple web pages, which float around in the room you are in, as it were. This makes multitasking a lot easier and clearer. The headset is controlled via eye and hand gestures and with Siri. But what about typing with the Vision Pro?

Floating keyboard in visionOS

Apple has developed a completely new operating system for the Vision Pro: visionOS. You will find well-known apps such as FaceTime, Photos and Messages in the new OS version, but of course focused on virtual reality. The headset is controlled without controllers, so Apple had to come up with a new way to enable typing with the Vision Pro.

That’s why a new floating keyboard has been introduced in visionOS. This keyboard appears when wearing the Vision Pro and typing then takes place via hand gestures. By touching the letters in the air, writing texts and messages in visionOS is completely new. A physical keyboard may soon be a thing of the past.

Vision Pro also works with Magic Keyboard

However, this does not immediately mean the end of a real keyboard. The Vision Pro also works with the Magic Keyboard. A floating keyboard can cause your hands to get tired after a while. After all, to type on the spatial keyboard, your hands must be kept in the air all the time. It is of course also possible to project the keyboard on your desk, but this can also be tiring for your hands after a while.

Fortunately, it is therefore also possible to connect the Magic Keyboard to the Vision Pro. The keyboard is then connected wirelessly via Bluetooth. You then type texts with the physical keyboard, as you are already used to with your Mac(Book).

Apple’s first headset is far from appearing

The Vision Pro has already been announced, but for now we have to wait a while for the glasses. The headset will not appear until 2024. Apple mentions early next year as a release date, so we probably expect the Apple Reality around this date.

Apple’s first VR glasses will be released in the United States first. It is not yet known if and when the Vision Pro will come to the Netherlands afterwards. There will undoubtedly be more clarity about this before 2024.
