Using Touch ID for App Store

Make iTunes and App Store purchases faster using Touch ID. By scanning your fingerprint, you don’t have to enter a password every time you make purchases.

Touch ID is the name for the fingerprint sensor in Apple devices. The sensor is hidden behind the Home button. If you have set up Touch ID, the sensor will scan your fingerprint as soon as you place your finger on the Home button. Then, for example, quickly unlock your device with the fingerprint. Touch ID can be used on an iPhone 5s or later, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad (5th generation), or iPad mini 3 or later that has a Home button.

Touch ID must be set up first, otherwise it cannot be used. You may have already done it when setting up the iPad or iPhone. If not, you can still do this. We describe how this works in the tip ‘What is Touch ID on iOS?‘ under the ‘Setup’ heading.

In addition to unlocking the device, you can also use Touch ID to approve purchases from the iTunes Store and App Store. You don’t have to enter your password every time, but just put your finger on the Home button. Activate this option like this:

  • Tap the app Institutions.
  • Scroll down and tap Touch ID and Passcode.
  • Enter your access code.
  • Make sure the slider behind ‘iTunes Store and App Store’ is green. Tap the slider if it’s white.
  • Enter your Apple ID password and tap OK.
  • From now on, you approve a purchase with your fingerprint. When you purchase something from the iTunes or App Store you will see a screen with ‘Touch ID’. Then put your finger on the Home button. The fingerprint is scanned and the purchase is approved.
