It can happen that your screen suddenly does not display the image properly. Think of colors that are not correct, a blurry image, flickering, moving image when that is not the intention. Here we give some tips for when you have problems with the display of your monitor.
Your screen facilitates the interaction between yourself and your computer. You often stare at it for hours a day. That is why it is important that the display is correct and pleasant, so that you do not suffer from your eyes or headaches.
If your monitor suddenly does not display the image properly, this can have various causes. Here we give some tips to solve the problem.
Turn monitor off
The simplest possible solution is to turn off your screen and leave it alone for half an hour. Then the screen has time to cool down, and the connection to the computer is disconnected. If the problem is related to the connection between your PC and your screen, it will often be resolved immediately when reconnecting as soon as you turn the screen back on.
Are you busy, and therefore no time to wait half an hour? Then turn off the screen for about 15 seconds to disconnect the monitor from the PC and turn it on again. If the problem is not resolved then it could be related to overheating. Then unfortunately you will have to leave your monitor off for a while to let it cool down.
Restart the computer
This is the standard solution for computer problems. It’s possible that an operating system problem is causing the strange display, and a simple reboot may just fix the problem.
Check cables
Does not restarting your monitor work, nor does restarting your computer help? Then it is time to check that no cables have loosened a bit. Turn off your computer and monitor, and pull all cables out of the ports on both sides. Then plug them back into the ports firmly. HDMI cables in particular can easily become a bit loose, because these cables – unlike DVI and VGA – cannot be screwed on.
Monitor settings
Still having problems? Then try to factory reset your monitor. This can probably be done via a physical button on the bottom or side of your monitor. You can’t change that much in the Windows 10 display settings.
If you think you know exactly what is wrong with the display of your monitor, you can use the buttons on the monitor to adjust the settings, such as brightness, color balance, saturation, and so on.
Graphics card settings
In Windows 10, it makes little sense to look at your graphics card settings, because Windows 10 (and Windows 8 as well) only supports the highest color quality. However, in older versions of Windows it may be useful to see if the best color options are selected.
To replace
Did none of these tips help? Then chances are that you are dealing with a problem with your hardware.
See if it helps to use other cables. If this does not help, try connecting another monitor to your computer to see if it is the monitor itself. If another monitor works properly, you can assume that your screen is broken and needs to be replaced. If you have the same problems with another monitor, it is probably not the monitor itself, but the graphics card in your computer.
Before you buy a new graphics card, it is a good idea to see if the problem occurs even before Windows is started, so during startup. Test another graphics card (maybe you can borrow one from someone) and see if that fixes the problem. If so, you will unfortunately have to buy a new graphics card.
