Toolbar from Edge
Edge’s toolbar is the bar at the top of the program. The toolbar contains, among other things, the tabs, address bar (where you type web addresses) and arrows to go back or forward a page. Some buttons you may not know or never use. Handy to be able to customize the toolbar.
Turn buttons on or off
Use Edge’s settings to set which buttons should be in the toolbar.
- Open the Microsoft Edge program.
- Click the ‘Settings and more’ icon at the top right > Institutions.
- Click on the left Appearance.
- Under ‘Customize Toolbar’ it says ‘Select the buttons you want to appear on the toolbar’ with the icons and names of the various buttons below. Click on the slider behind the name of a button. If the slider is blue, the button is in the toolbar. Useful buttons are for example:
- The ‘Downloads’ button
Click on this and a list of files most recently downloaded with Edge will open. - The ‘History’ button
Quickly find previously opened web pages.
- The ‘Downloads’ button
Feel free to turn on some buttons and click on them if they are in the toolbar. If you don’t like it, simply turn the function off again via the slider in the settings.
Vertical Tabs
By default, the tabs with open websites are horizontal. If you don’t like that, use vertical tabs.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the ‘Settings and more’ icon at the top right > Institutions.
- Click on the left Appearance.
- Under ‘Customize Toolbar’ it says ‘Show vertical tabs for all current browser windows’. Click on Switch.
- The tabs appear in a list on the left. That’s what it looks like.
- Click on a tab and the page opens on the right.
Favorites Toolbar in Edge
Another toolbar is available below the address bar: the so-called Favorites toolbar. Save frequently used websites here, so you don’t have to type the web address next time. Read more about this in the article ‘Favorite websites in Egde’.
