Rename iPhone or iPad

By default, an iPhone or iPad is given a name that is used by services such as AirDrop and a hotspot. Determine the name of the device yourself.

Every iPhone or iPad has a name. By default this is ‘iPhone from xxx’ or ‘iPad from xxx’. The crosses here represent the name that the user entered when setting up the device. The name isn’t in the big picture anywhere, but some features and services make use of it.

For example, the name comes along when using iCloud, AirDrop and a personal hotspot. You share the mobile internet connection of your iPhone or iPad with other devices via a personal hotspot. The list of internet connections available for the other device will then contain the name of your iPhone/iPad. This name can be changed.

Think of a useful name for the device and adjust it in the settings:

  • Tap the app Institutions.
  • Tap on General.
  • Tap on Info.
  • Tap on Name.
  • Delete the current name by tapping the cross behind it.
  • Type a new name and tap Ready.
