YouTube on smartphone or tablet

YouTube is full of fun videos. Enjoy the offer on your smartphone or tablet with the YouTube app.

The online service YouTube allows people around the world to post and watch videos. The company was founded in 2005 and is now owned by Google. YouTube has a billion visitors every month. They watch billions of hours of videos via the site and app.

If you don’t have the YouTube app yet, you can download ‘mu via the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android devices). Need help installing the app? Check out the tip ‘Download an app from the App Store’ or the tip ‘Download an app from the Play Store (Android)’.

When opening the app, YouTube may ask for your login information. It depends on other settings and the accounts associated with the device. For example, if you have already linked a Gmail address, the Gmail address will appear on the screen and you only need to click the button with ‘Continue as [uw naam]’ to tap. To watch YouTube without logging in, tap Continue as guest.

The app can also redirect you directly to the YouTube home screen upon launch.

You already get suggestions for videos on the overview screen. There are also four tabs at the bottom: ‘Home’, ‘Discover’, ‘Subscriptions’ and ‘Library’. And at the top right is the image of a doll Account icon in YouTube app. When you are logged in, there will be a picture of your choice or the first letter of the account name. Here you will find information about a possibly linked account. Next to this button is a magnifying glass icon. This opens the search function.

You can search videos from the home screen. To do this, tap the magnifying glass button at the top right. A search bar appears. In it you can type names, words, keywords or titles.

  • Tap the magnifying glass at the top Magnifying glass icon to search in YouTube app.
  • The search bar opens. In the search box, enter a keyword, such as the word “SeniorWeb.”
  • Tap the blue button (iPhone/iPad) or magnifying glass (Android devices) on the keyboard.

Open the results. At the top is the SeniorWeb logo (if you searched on SeniorWeb), which refers to the video channel where our videos are. Below the logo are individual videos.

Found an interesting video? Tap it and the video will start right away. Below the video is a short description. Depending on whether you are using the device in portrait or landscape orientation, there is a list of suggestions below or next to the video. With a smartphone, there are no suggestions in the landscape position.

During playback, you may want to know how long the video has left, or you may want to pause it. Then tap the video; more options will then appear. For example, pause the video with a tap on the pause button, which appears in the center of the frame. The triangle button will resume the video. Below the video is a timeline, there you can see how long the video will last.

There are also icons around the video. At the bottom right is a button with angle brackets. Tap it to make the video fill the screen. The button changes shape. Tap the button with the brackets again to make the image smaller again.

At the top right of the video is an icon with three dots YouTube menu icon. Tap it to see additional options (if the button is not visible, tap the video; the buttons will appear). There are five options by default (the order of the options may vary). With smartphones there is an extra option for using VR glasses.

  1. Quality: The quality of the video stream is automatically adjusted according to the speed of your internet connection. Tap the button Quality to adjust the quality manually. This is only available if you use Wi-Fi, not if you have a cellular connection over, for example, 4G.
  2. Subtitles: If subtitles are available, you can activate them via this button. Subtitles are not available for all videos. All SeniorWeb videos are subtitled.
  3. Report: Only use this option if you find the content of the video inappropriate. Think of horrific videos or pornography.
  4. Help and Feedback: Find a solution here if you’re having trouble.
  5. Playback speed: Set the speed at which a video is played.

Tap outside the window and the menu window closes again.

Right arrow button Share video icon on YouTube is meant to share the video with other people. This can be done via email and WhatsApp. The option ‘copy link’ is useful in the list of options. You can then paste the link wherever you want.

Are you done with the video? Then tap the open triangle icon with the point down at the top left of the playback screen back button. Can’t see a button? Then tap on the video and all buttons will appear again.

By the way, if you tap the triangle during the video playback, you will also return to the overview. But the video you watched remains visible in a small window at the bottom. Tap it to go back to the video. Or tap another video in the feed to start another video.

Would you like to use more options, such as a playlist, watch videos later or a subscription to video channels from SeniorWeb, for example? Then log in with your Gmail account or create a special account. Such an account can be used on the normal website and in the app. If you are logged in and, for example, add a video to a playlist via the app, the video will also be included in your list on the website.
