In iOS 17, Apple had introduced a number of new features. The new 3D responses were one of them. You use this during a video call in FaceTime (and other video apps). Different effects are created by making certain hand gestures. Think of hearts, confetti and fireworks.

By default this function is enabled. But Apple plans to make some changes in iOS 17.4. According to 9to5Mac Apple will disable the comment creation feature by default in iOS 17.4 (for new users). They will then see a message telling them they can enable the feature in the settings.

It is not yet entirely certain whether Apple will disable comments by default for everyone. But Apple has received quite a bit of backlash for its 3D responses in FaceTime. For example, users accidentally activated the function during business meetings. So it looks like comments will be turned off by default in iOS 17.4.

How to Turn Off Video Comments in iOS 17

If you find the comments annoying (and you don’t want to wait for Apple), you can turn them off now. You do this in iOS 17 in the following way.

  1. Launch the FaceTime app;

  2. Open Control Center by swiping down on the top right corner of your iPhone. On an iPhone with a home button, you swipe from bottom to top;

  3. Tap Effects;

  4. Turn off the ‘Reactions’ by tapping on them.
