In principle, you can only share a Netflix account with your own household, but in practice it is also possible to share accounts with friends or colleagues by simply entering your password. Netflix is actively looking for ways to tackle unlimited sharing and is experimenting with a cheaper subscription model, especially for so-called subaccounts. How can you share your Netflix account and what might change?
Any Netflix user can share their account with others, regardless of the subscription you have taken out. There is a difference in the number of screens you can watch at the same time. For example, with the cheapest subscription you can only watch on one screen at a time, while with the most expensive variant you can watch four screens.
This is how you share your account
Not much goes into sharing your account. The other only needs your login details to use Netflix. It is useful to create their own profile for that person. This prevents Netflix from making recommendations based on films or series that you have not seen yourself.
You can easily create a profile by going to the page Manage profiles to go and click Add profile† In the mobile app, you can tap the profile icon to open the page Manage profiles to find.
Warning
You may therefore only share a Netflix account with other members of your household, but if you do not do this, there are no concrete consequences. The streaming service will not suddenly stop your subscription. You may receive a warning.
Several users who do not live at the same address as the main account recently received a message on their screen that they need their own account to continue watching. They had to verify their account via email or text message. That was a test at the time. Not every user will see this warning.
Pay for sub accounts
Netflix has been looking for ways to curb unlimited sharing for some time now. Recently, the streaming service in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru has started an experiment with a new subscription model for users who share their accounts. Households get the option to create sub accounts for a small fee. Netflix is talking about a cost of $2.99, a fraction of the price of a standard subscription, which costs $12.99 in Costa Rica. You can attach two profiles to each subaccount.
It may therefore no longer be possible to share a Netflix account free of charge in the long term.
