What is Keynote?
Keynote is an Apple program for creating slideshows, or presentations. It is comparable to the Microsoft PowerPoint program. Keynote comes by default on a Mac. Is this not the case with you? Download the program for free from the App Store. Read how to do this in the tip ‘Download a program from the App Store (Mac)’.
Open keynote
Open Keynote as follows:
- Open the Finder from the smiley face icon on the Dock.
- click on apps.
- Double click on the program keynote.
- Click the first time Continue.
New slideshow
Then we start creating a new slideshow. Keynote offers several themes for the layout of such a presentation. Scroll through that until you find a theme that fits.
- At the bottom left of the window, click New document.
- Click on the desired theme.
- Finally, click on the bottom right create.
Fill in slide
Almost all standard slides have text or image boxes. They can be filled with your own material.
- Double-click the text in the box.
- Enter the desired text.
- Double click on the text to choose a different format. Right click on the tab Text. Select the desired formatting options there.
- Click at the top Media > photos to add your own footage.
- A window opens with photos stored in the Photos app. Click on the desired folder on the left and then on the desired photo on the right.
Add slide
There is only one slide in the newly created presentation. Add more slides:
- Click at the top of the window add slide.
- Click on one of the possible slide formats. Do you want to add each part yourself? Then click on Empty.
Place text
In addition to filling in the parts on a slide, you can also add texts or media yourself. At the top of the screen are the options: Table, Chart, Text, Shape and Media. Here’s how inserting text works:
- Click at the top of the screen Text.
- A small box appears on the slide. Click in this box and type the text.
- Click on the text box and format the text using the options on the right of the “Text” tab.
- Click the text box again, hold down the mouse button and drag the text box to the correct position.
Insert photos and videos
Insert a photo or video? Follow the steps below:
- Click at the top of the screen Media.
- click on Choose.
- Navigate to the file you want to insert and click on it.
- click on add.
- There are white squares on the side of the photo or video. Click on such a square, hold down the mouse button and drag the box in or out to make the image or video larger or smaller.
- Click on the plane, hold down the mouse button and drag it to the right place.
Save presentation
Don’t forget to save the presentation.
- Click on the menu at the top of the screen Archive.
- click on Keep.
- Type a name for the document. Make sure that all documents have different names. Files with the same name will be overwritten.
- Navigate to the folder where the document should be.
- click on Keep.
The document can be opened again later with Keynote.
Export presentation for PowerPoint
Not everyone works on a Mac. Want to share the Keynote show with someone who uses Microsoft PowerPoint? Then convert the file to a PowerPoint file. This is called ‘exporting’. Do it like this:
- Click in the menu bar on Archive.
- click on Export to.
- click on PowerPoint.
- click on Next one.
- Type a name for the document.
- Navigate to the folder where the document should come
- Finally click Export.
