GP of Emilia-Romagna cancelled

It was already in it and now it is also official: the Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna next weekend will not take place. The Formula 1 race weekend has been canceled due to the flooding in the region.

The organization of Formula 1 and the FIA, together with the local authorities and organizers, have decided to cancel the race weekend in Imola due to the flooding in Emilia-Romagna. In a statement, F1 said: “It is not possible to organize the event safely for our fans, the teams and the staff due to the situation in the cities in the region. It would not be right to put even more pressure now. practice on local authorities and emergency services during this difficult time.”

Earlier this week, local authorities declared code red due to expected extreme amounts of precipitation. On Tuesday, those already present at the circuit were evacuated and on Wednesday no Formula 1 personnel were allowed to go that way. Images are surfacing on social media of a partially flooded Formula 2 paddock and the Santerno, the river right next to the circuit, is also extremely high. Staff from Alpine and Red Bull, among others, stayed in hotels in the area around which the streets were completely flooded.

It is not yet known whether the race weekend in Imola will be made up later this year. It’s a busy calendar this season, so the chance seems small. The next race weekend is next week. Then Formula 1 travels to Monaco.
