Latest EV platform Stellantis has a range of more than 700 kilometers

Stellantis has four new and purely EV modular platforms ready. The STLA Medium variant of this will be the first and will soon help cars such as the Peugeot e-3008 and e-5008 to an electric range of up to 700 kilometers.

Stellantis is already quite far when it comes to fully electric cars. Popular electric models such as the Peugeot e-208, e-2008 and the equivalents of those cars from brands such as Opel, DS and Jeep, as well as larger EVs such as the Peugeot e-308 and Opel Astra Electric, all still use platforms that are used in the basis have not been developed purely for electric cars. For example, more compact models are on a variant of the CMP platform adapted for EVs and the compact mid-sized cars share a similarly modified EMP2 platform that you will also find among the variants with combustion engines. The future looks different. Stellantis announced two years ago that it has four new modular EV platforms on the shelves. Compact models will be placed on the STLA Small version, compact mid-sized cars on the STLA Medium version and for larger models, the STLA Large version will be on the shelves. Electric commercial vehicles and pick-ups will in turn be placed on the STLA Frame platform. The modular STLA Medium platform is the first of the foursome that comes under cars and it is that variant that Stellantis is now shining an extensive light on.

Wait a second. Cars like the Jeep Avenger are already on the STLA Small version, aren’t they? Yes and no. Although the e-CMP base under those cars is sometimes referred to as STLA Small, that is not a completely new base. Stellantis now emphatically states that the STLA Medium bottom plate is the first of the four STLA platforms to be launched on the market. The electric Peugeot e-3008 and e-5008, the current 3008 and 5008 to be unveiled this year, are the first Stellantis cars to use STLA Medium. Stellantis promises an electric range of at best ‘more than 700 kilometers’ for cars using STLA Medium. Peugeot already communicated such a range for the new e-3008 and e-5008 and therefore also means a lot of good for the electric successors of the C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland and for the next generation of other (compact) medium-sized vehicles from Stellantis, such as next Opel Astra, Peugeot 308 and DS 4, but that’s not all.

Stellantis says that it will not only use the STLA Medium for compact middle class cars (C-segment), but also for middle class cars (D-segment cars). This also means that cars such as the next generation Peugeot 508 will use the base. Various Stellantis factories will build cars on the STLA Medium platform and the giant group aims to eventually produce up to 2 million cars on this basis annually. Stellantis’ great focus on its new modular platforms and the hefty investment of €30 billion that the company is investing in electrification up to and including 2025 is of course not without reason. Stellantis has set itself the goal of selling only fully electric cars in Europe from 2030. Even in the United States, 50 percent of all Stellantis cars sold must be an EV from that year.

STLA Medium: up to 285 kW fast charging

By no means all cars that will be placed on the STLA Medium platform will have a range of more than 700 kilometres. Stellantis pairs that decent range with EVs with what it calls the “Performance” battery pack. This is a battery pack with a net capacity of 98 kWh. A less intense variant is called the Standard battery and should give cars a range of ‘more than 500 kilometers’. The STLA Medium base has 400V on-board voltage and, depending on the model and battery pack, must be able to charge quickly with a minimum of 160 kW to a maximum of 285 kW. The STLA Medium platform is suitable for cars with a wheelbase of 2.7 to 2.9 meters and a car length of 4.3 to 4.9 metres. For SUV-types, Stellantis promises up to 22 centimeters of ground clearance.

Later this year we will be introduced to the new Peugeot e-3008. Specs on that car undoubtedly offer an even more interesting glimpse into Stellantis’ EV future.
