Old iPad: this is what other people do with it

Now that Apple has released a new iPad Pro and iPad Air and people are switching over, we were curious to see what they do with their old iPad. We give you an overview.

What do people do with their old iPads?

From one report from CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) on May 15, it appears that more and more people are waiting longer to upgrade their iPad. As many as 40 percent of respondents indicate that they will wait three years or more before buying a new Apple tablet. That is 4 percent more than in 2023 and 12 percent more than in 2022.

In a new report CIRP shows what users do with their previous iPads after upgrading. And these are very different things than what people do with their old iPhones, which are largely traded in when purchasing a new iPhone.

Most people keep it

The largest share of users (36 percent) say they will keep their old iPad, while the second largest group (31 percent) say they will give the Apple tablet to a friend or family member. 23 percent indicate that their old device was lost, stolen or broken. Finally, 6 percent have sold their old tablet and only 3 percent have traded it in when purchasing a new one.

The results are not very surprising because the trade-in/resale value of the iPad is lower than that of the iPhone. That is probably the reason that a majority of users decide to keep the iPad or give it away. Furthermore, it is striking that a significantly higher percentage of iPad users have a broken, lost or stolen device than iPhone users.
