Smart comes with an electric SUV

With the ForTwo and ForFour, Smart no longer has a very modern range, but that will change in the coming years. In China, the brand is preparing a real SUV.

The Smarts ForTwo (Cabrio) and ForFour have been with us since 2014 and since then the arrival of the electrically powered variants has been the biggest news around the brand. These appeared on the market in 2017 and are now the only thing you can turn to at Smart for. In terms of sales numbers, things have not been going smoothly for the past two years, so it is important for the brand that a new model is on the way. Now that Daimler and Geely jointly own Smart, the two parties are working hard together on an SUV from Smart. This is reported by Sales Vice President Daniel Lescow on his Linkedin page.

According to Lescow, the brand’s SUV will soon be on the SEA base of Geely. This new modular EV platform was revealed last September at the presentation of the Lynk & Co Zero Concept. Of course, Lescow doesn’t reveal details yet, but he does say that the car is instantly recognizable as Smart, perfect for urban use, and that the car offers ‘plenty of interior space packed into a compact exterior’. As mentioned, Geely is responsible for the technical development, but also the construction of the new Smart. Daimler is still responsible for the design.

We may be able to welcome the model soon. Last summer, it was announced that a completely new electrically powered Smart can be expected as early as 2022. Given their age, a successor to the current duo would not be surprising, but who knows, it may indeed be the SUV.
