Volkswagen Tiguan is also going electric

Volkswagen classifies its fully EV-developed models under the ID label. But, what does it do with model names such as Golf and Tiguan? It was recently announced by Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer that a fully electric Golf can exist alongside the ID3 because the latter was never intended as a Golf successor. That electric Golf is also coming and a step below the ID3. It could just be called ‘ID Golf’, but that is not yet officially known. And what about the Tiguan? It seems to be facing the same electric future.

During a special meeting with shareholders, the Volkswagen Group focused extensively on the Porsche IPO, but also gave a bird’s-eye view of how the group and its brands are preparing for the future. The head of the Volkswagen Group – Oliver Blume – indicated that Volkswagen is developing new design languages ​​and is coming up with a quality offensive to make the products of its brands more attractive. In addition, according to Blume, the Volkswagen brand is currently investigating how it can translate the Golf and Tiguan into the electric future.

The arrival of the electric Golf was previously confirmed, so it is likely that the Volkswagen Tiguan will also have an electric future. Or does that mean that the future Tiguan will be on the MEB platform? That’s just the question. In any case, there will be a new generation of Volkswagen Tiguan that will still have combustion engines. It is not inconceivable that the Tiguan – which is on a further developed MQB platform – will get a fully electric variant. We have already seen a hitherto unknown Tiguan-sized electric Volkswagen in test suit twice, so that something is bubbling is evident.

Anyway: Volkswagen seems busy with the transfer of model names that it has been taking for decades to the electric future. By no means every electric Volkswagen becomes a numerical offshoot of the ID family.
