WhatsApp has activated two-step verification today. This adds extra strong security to your account. This is how you enable WhatsApp two-step verification.

With WhatsApp two-step verification you can secure your account extra well. By enabling the two-step verification, you must enter the passcode when registering a phone number in WhatsApp. This code is separate from WhatsApp, making it extra difficult for a hacker to access your data.

How to activate WhatsApp two-step verification:

  1. Open WhatsApp;
  2. Go to Settings;
  3. Choose Account;
  4. Tap ‘Two-step verification’;
  5. Toggle the switch to green to activate WhatsApp two-step verification.

WhatsApp uses a different technique with the access code than most chat services. Many chat apps send a text message containing a verification code. The only danger here is that this SMS can be intercepted. This happened in the past, for example at Telegram. By replacing the SMS verification with an access code, this cannot happen with WhatsApp.

To prevent you from forgetting this passcode, WhatsApp will ask you to enter the six-digit code once a week. In addition, a stolen iPhone can only access someone’s WhatsApp data for a maximum of one week. After a long beta test, the new feature is now gradually becoming available to everyone. You do not have to manually update the app for this. WhatsApp activates the function on the side of its servers.

Function gradually rolled out

WhatsApp has been working on improving the security of the chat service for some time. All chat conversations are automatically secured with end-to-end encryption. This allows only you and the recipient to read the messages. Even WhatsApp itself does not get any insight into this. This makes WhatsApp not only the most popular, but also one of the safest chat services at the moment.
